LASIK is a refractive laser surgery that reshapes the cornea to correct prescription errors such as myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia. It is currently one of the most widely used procedures to improve vision without the need for glasses.
What is it?
It is an outpatient, fast and generally painless surgery. Specialized studies are performed beforehand to evaluate the prescription, corneal thickness and shape, and overall eye health, in order to determine candidacy and personalize the treatment.
Who is it for?
For people with myopia, astigmatism or hyperopia who wish to reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses. It is generally recommended for adults with stable prescription and a cornea suitable for the procedure. Each case is evaluated individually before indicating surgery.
How is it performed?
The procedure is performed with eye-drop anesthesia. Laser technology creates a very thin layer on the cornea and excimer laser is then applied to reshape it and correct the prescription. Surgery takes a few minutes per eye and does not require hospitalization.
Recovery
Vision usually improves from the first hours, though it may fluctuate slightly during the first days. Eye drops are prescribed after surgery and rubbing the eyes should be avoided temporarily. Most people resume their usual activities the next day.
